Princes of the Apocalypse

I finally have it! Hopefully this will translate to more regular posting on this blog.

  1. It looks like the scale of the Forgotten Realms has changed significantly between Lost Mine of Phandelver and Princes of the Apocalypse:

I'd love to hear your analysis of how this has changed between editions.

  2. Good find!

Um, I just assume it's more of the sloppy, half-assed editing/QA - "see page xx" being my favourite example - that is part and parcel of the WotC process. But, wow, they really screwed the pooch on the scale here: 10 miles is really 3.75 miles? That's not a rounding error: that's a fundamental lack of attention to detail.

Oh well, yet another reason for me to stick with the 4E version of the Realms. :)

  3. If you read Chris Perkins' tweet, it was apparently an intentional change to restore the scale of earlier editions, rather than an oversight.

That's why I was curious to find out more about how the scale has been represented from edition to edition.

  4. My impression was that they simply screwed the pooch.

The scale has changed that much between editions. I still use the FR Interactive Atlas to measure distances (based on 1E and 2E scale) and it still comes up pretty close to later distances.

And I find it passing strange that scale suddenly became an issue on one map out of three....

    Occam's Razor: sloppy/non-existent QA.

  6. Thanks for the kind words, +Aaron. I hope to get some posts done this month but have been a bit busy with a new baby and whatnot. I'm still only on about page 15 or so of the adventure as well so I better start reading!
